The Downside of Owning

On the way to my house
It’s surprising to see hazard lights
on a stopped car ahead
And see a body lying in front.
Hazards are so commonly used
for silly things.
Not this time.
The car was empty
Poor driver, shocked and surprised, too
I would hope, out looking for you.
At first not knowing what this body was
Just seeing a dark form in the still-lit headlights
accenting the shape of this sad sight
then a split-second later
my car is passed this tiny tragedy
and I register what I saw
Whoever you are,
I hope that driver found the wrong address,
the wrong set of tags.
I hope that brown-black dog
is not yours.
